Approximately 76 years ago, back in 1947, nestled within the unforgiving, snow-covered wilderness of the Alaskan expanse, a small colony of 20 houses endured. These sturdy structures lay deep within the icy embrace of the forest, a stark contrast to the typical American suburban dwelling. Vegetation was a scarce sight in this frigid land, where Alaska, that remote, vast terrain in the northwest of North America, stretched its frozen fingers towards Greenland, creating a similar icy climate. The intrepid few who called this place home embraced a tribal existence, earning the nickname ‘Icy Humans.’ Their survival depended on hunting and the indispensable aid of their loyal sled dogs. They fashioned homes surrounded by the pristine snow, their abodes known as Igloos. The land remained blanketed in snow for nine long months, with a brief thaw lasting a mere two or three. Mornings meant embarking into the snowy expanse to seek out their sustenance. And without the luxury of fire, raw meat occasionally became their meal.
Within this colony, unity and love thrived, born from the necessity of navigating such a harsh environment with limited resources. Miles away, a massive mountain served as a haven for a group of marauding bandits and thieves. Travelers who dared to traverse the treacherous mountain routes faced their challenges, but these brigands dared not venture near the colony of 20 houses. It was the collective strength and unwavering resolve of the colony’s inhabitants that shielded them from such threats.
In this secluded community, a family led the way – Robert, his wife Nancy, and their 16-year-old son, Peter. Theirs was a life woven with strong bonds and contentment. When the bitterest winter months arrived, Robert, joined by Nancy and young Peter, embarked on hunting expeditions. Twelve dogs and a sled cart accompanied them through the winter’s grip as they hunted the large game that would sustain them through those long, frigid days. Their preferred prey was Seals, which offered both nourishment and a much-needed source of light in the form of their fat.
To an observer from afar, the figures of the colony’s inhabitants, their skin-wrapped forms and gleaming teeth, might have been mistaken for seals themselves. They and their loyal dogs, some resembling German Shepherds or Huskies, were survivors perfectly adapted to this harsh, snowy world. In the distance, a jagged mountain range was the domain of wild wolves, dwelling in an area ominously known as the ‘cursed region.’ No colony member dared venture there, for those who had never returned. The wolves and malevolent spirits seemed to claim all who ventured within, ensuring the cursed region’s eerie reputation.
Once upon a time, a wolf from the cursed woods approached the nearby colony. It prowled, driven by hunger, until it caught wind of the tantalizing scent of meat drifting from Peter’s dwelling. The Robert family had wisely stored this meat for the impending winter. The hungry wolf, driven by its instincts, silently inched closer to their home, closing the distance to a mere ten meters. When Robert sensed the threat, he cautiously stepped outside, armed and ready. The wolf, upon sighting him, pounced. The gunshot rang out, and the bullet pierced the wolf’s leg before exiting. Nancy, Robert’s wife, rushed to the scene, but as she did, two more wolves emerged from the shadows. The injured wolf, considering Nancy an easier target, lunged at her. Robert found himself locked in a perilous battle with the other two wolves. When the wounded wolf attacked, its sharp teeth seized the sealskin jacket Nancy wore
At the sound of the commotion, Peter hurried from the house, his steps trembling with fear. The injured wolf was dragging Nancy, his mother, away. This wolf, massive and towering at over six feet, had snowy fur and piercing blue eyes. As panic overtook Peter, he hurled large stones at the wolf in a desperate attempt to save his mother. But in the chaos, another wolf lunged at him, knocking him unconscious. A second wolf began to drag Peter away, leaving him helpless. Robert, witnessing the dire situation, took aim and shot one of the wolves before lunging at the other. As Peter regained partial consciousness, he managed to free himself and crawled toward his injured mother on the ground. But the entire pack of wolves overwhelmed Robert, leading to a tragic outcome. From a distance, Peter, still in a daze with half-closed eyes, watched this devastating scene unfold and resolved to rescue his mother.
Meanwhile, upon hearing the commotion, a group of bandits passing by arrived. The robbers pursued the wolves with their hunting dogs, although fear caused some hesitation. When the robbers arrived, many wolves fled, but three wolves, including the one holding Peter’s mother, stood their ground. As the two wolves prepared to pounce, the robbers fired a volley of sharp bullets, piercing through them. The wolf holding Peter’s mother broke her neck and advanced toward Peter. Before it reached him, a thrown dagger from one of the robbers wounded the wolf. The bandits, oblivious to the wolf’s survival, began stripping jewelry from Nancy’s body with the same dagger, heartlessly kicking her when she cried for help, resulting in her tragic demise.
In a semi-conscious state, Peter watched helplessly from a distance. His body gradually responded as he observed the horrifying scene with half-closed eyes. The robbers advanced to his house, looting everything with malicious delight. The injured wolf and Peter, from their vantage point, were consumed by anger – the wolf, seeking vengeance, and Peter, seething with rage at the mistreatment of his mother and the pillaging of his home. Slowly, the wolf succumbed to its wounds, and Peter lay unconscious.
The wolf’s vengeful spirit remained in place, consumed with fury, yearning to exact revenge upon the bandits. Unfulfilled, it resolved to avenge its inability to act. The bandits, unaware of the lingering spirit, emerged from the house jubilantly, tossing the loot they had stolen into the air. The wolf’s spirit, watching from afar, remembered how the bandits had mercilessly taken its life and the lives of its companions. Upon its emergence, it selected Peter’s body as its vessel, determined to exact its long-awaited revenge.
After some time, Peter regained consciousness, only to find his mother lifeless and his father missing. Grieving, he carried Nancy’s body back, performing her final rites with the support of sympathetic colony members. The entire community shared in Peter’s sorrow as he grappled with the loss of everything he held dear. Several days passed
Peter gradually grew up, but the loss of his parents left him profoundly sad. He would become extremely angry when he thought about the accident that befell his parents. He held the bandits and wolves responsible for their deaths. Day and night, he contemplated how to exact revenge, unaware of the great power residing within him—a vengeful wolf spirit.
Strange changes began to manifest in Peter’s body. On moonlit nights, he remained unchanged, but as the Moon’s light waned and the day transitioned into darkness, his body grew stronger. By the time the moonless night arrived, he felt exceptionally strong and would awaken suddenly at the sound of wolves, feeling as if his body was beginning to transform.
Hair would sprout all over his body, his eyes would turn red, and he would grow three times larger than his original size. He developed sharp teeth and claws resembling those of a wolf. Only he was aware of these changes, but he couldn’t comprehend why they were happening.
Gradually, on a moonless night, Peter completed his transformation into a wolf-man. He sported large, sharp teeth and claws and grew to a height of seven feet. He appeared extremely ferocious, with saliva dripping from his teeth and mouth, and his eyes filled with anger. The wolf’s spirit was eager to seek revenge on the bandits; for instance, Peter’s spirit contemplated the bandits who had looted his house and killed his mother. Simultaneously, he witnessed his own house being ransacked by the same bandits, for Peter now harbored the spirit of a wolf, and their shared motivation for revenge remained the bandits. Transformed into a wolf, Peter could leap ten feet from the house in one jump, feeling boundless power. He roared loudly in the voice of a wolf, owoooo. At this sound, many wolves emerged from the cursed area. Peter, now a dangerous and ferocious wolf, stood at the forefront, with all the other wolves behind him. As a wolf, Peter contemplated the revenge he needed to exact from the bandits for his parent’s deaths.
Peter, disguised as a wolf, raced toward the mountainous area where the bandits resided, with a pack of wolves in pursuit. The robbers were taken aback by the commotion and grew restless as it approached. The pack of wolves advanced toward them, and a bandit rushed to his leader, shouting that a large pack of wolves was rapidly closing in. Before all the bandits could reach for their weapons, they heard the howling of the wolves.
The wolves had formed a circle, encircling all the bandits within. At the front stood Peter, a very tall and large white wolf, his angry blue eyes reflecting fierce anger. The leader of the bandits lost his senses when he saw Peter’s long sharp teeth and open jaw. In a single leap, Peter clamped his jaws around the bandit leader’s neck and severed his body with one swift motion. One by one, all the bandits met a similar fate.
All the wolves now sat down, bowing before Peter. He roared and asked all the wolves who had killed the man named Robert. Five wolves came forward from that herd. Now Peter’s spirit had overpowered the wolf’s spirit. The wolf spirit wanted to save those five wolves, but Peter’s spirit wanted to kill them. This internal struggle continued within Peter’s body for some time. Along with all the other wolves, those five wolves were also unable to understand what was happening. Ultimately, Peter’s spirit prevailed, and he sought vengeance for his father’s death. Peter, in his wolf form, then proceeded to kill all five wolves one by one. Some wolves rebelled and began howling, but Peter, who possessed extraordinary power, dealt with them as well. Soon, all the wolves fell silent and sat before Peter.
Peter ordered them all to leave the place called the Cursed Fields forever, warning that any wolf appearing there in the future would be responsible for its own demise.
Upon hearing this, all the wolves began leaving one by one. Peter returned to the colony and resumed his human form. During the day, he carried out his duties, and at night, he transformed into a wolf to protect the colony. The colony’s residents noticed that a large white wolf often guarded their settlement at night. They observed that due to the presence of this prominent wolf, no other wolves could be seen or heard during the night. Fearing the wolf, they would leave food for it and stand at a distance. The wolf accepted the food, wagged its tail, and greeted those who offered it. Witnessing this, the village residents were delighted, and the news quickly spread throughout the community that the big wolf was their defender. It didn’t take long for the people of the colony to realize that because of the fear instilled by this wolf, all the other wolves had left the accursed area. The colony itself became Peter’s family. However, none of the colony’s residents knew that Peter was the large wolf safeguarding them.
They affectionately called him the “defender Wolf” and erected a stone statue of him at the main gate of the colony, commencing their worship. In reality, even after Peter’s death, his spirit continued to reside in the form of a wolf within the same colony. Long after his passing, Peter continued to protect the colony as a wolf, a role he still fulfills today.
It is undeniably true that by recognizing one’s family in others and extending help, one can receive divine strength beyond imagination. Love is recognizing one’s family among strangers.
